The Powder Metal Process | Other Parts Created by Dymet Using Powder Metal |

Gears are well suited to powder metal production. Porosity, inherent in powder metal parts, naturally dampens sound. Gears can be further enhanced with the application of dry film lubricant (D#16). Gear and pinion combinations can be made as one part. Gears can be combined with other parts such as cams, ratchets, and other gears. This reduces part and assembly costs.

Dymet can produce helical gears. Helical angles can be easily produced up to 15º, after that the tooling becomes more complex and the tool costs rise.

Copper infiltration is also available to increase the gear tooth strength.

Dymet can provide secondary operations for additional strength, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. Since tooth configuration is not a problem true involute gears are easier to make by powder metal than by other method.

As the AGMA class number increases so does the cost of the gear because of the additional secondary operations required to meet the tighter tolerances.

Dymet is capable of producing an AGMA gear class 6 and 7. To increase tool life, avoid having tool members too thin.

Gear hubs and pinions should be located as far as possible from gear root diameters. In many instances, a planetary gear set can be completely made from powder metal gears. Often the ring gear is far less expensive as a powder metal component than any other production method.
